SHOP SPECIALIZED STATUS
Specialized's Status is a bike for all types of riders, from absolute beginners to all out shredders, young and old. It's a bike that demands to be ridden hard, with geometry that encourages riders to push the boundaries, and a burly parts spec that won't let them down. And the best part? It's super affordable.
The new Status 2 doesn't seek to change the game - the original Status already hit the right spot, it just adds more versatility to an already well rounded package, while keeping things modern and up to date. The Status 2 knocks it out the park with its new geometry and spec packages, coming in 140mm, 170mm, and 170 DH versions, complete with dual crown fork and DH drivetrain, plus new size 0 options with smaller wheels for younger riders.
Each bike has a burly parts spec capable of withstanding big sends lap after lap. Built to be shred ready, and pedal friendly, the Status 2 was designed to do it all from quick laps to grocery store urban shredding and all-day pedal fests, and come back begging for more. In short, it's the most bike you can get for your money, and it's rad.
Status Key Details
The Status comes in two guises, the 140 and 170 - that's 140mm and 170mm rear travel, with a 170 DH option, that bumps up the travel on the front with a 180mm dual crown fork, however the frame and rear travel stays the same, and all bikes run mixed wheels, with both 170mm bikes running coil shocks. New for the status 2 is the addition of Size Zero 140 and 170 models for smaller riders, rocking a mixed wheel 26"/27.5" setup on the same travel configuration, with tuned suspension and components perfect for rider size.
The Status 2 casts a similar silhouette to the previous generation, but cleans up the lines a little, with new tube shapes and a dropped top tube for a more aggressive look. We think it looks pretty sharp. Just like the previous generation, the Status 2 runs an FSR suspension layout - something Specialized have stuck with for more than 20 years - it's fair to say it's pretty dialled at this point. FSR works great for beginner and advanced riders alike, with a not-too-progressive leverage curve, and great small bump compliance and is very active, meaning lots of traction for a confident and predictable ride.
The Status 2 uses a lot of sensible standards, and when we say standard, we mean you'll be able to get parts easily, including boost hub spacing, threaded bottom brackets, 34.9 seatpost, tapered head tube, post mount brakes, a standard eyelet shock, chain guide mounts, SRAM UDH, and space for a bottle cage. Nice to have upgrades include internal cabling with the option to run the rear brake hose on the outside for ease of service, and a flip chip geometry adjust at the chainstay.
Geometry
On the 170mm Status the head angle sits at 64º in high, and 63.5º in low, and the seat tube angle at 77º and 77.6º, with the 140mm bike half a degree steeper in the head tube angle, and identical in the seat tube. Reach is 470/471mm in high position, with chainstays from 427mm-436mm on the 140mm bike, and 432mm-441mm on the 170mm bike. BB drop is 34mm in high and 26mm in low on the 170, and 38mm and 30mm on the 140 bike.
Sensible numbers in line with modern trail/enduro bikes mean a ride that's fast and capable when it needs to be, without being a pig at slower speeds, plus shorter chainstays make for a quick handling bike that's fun in the corners. Perfect.
Who Is the Status For?
The Status is a bike for the customers that can't afford or don't need a carbon super bike like the Stumpjumper or Enduro, but still want that Specialized ride and build quality. Specialized focussed on creating a bike with awesome geometry and suspension with a great value build kit that still performs. It's the bike for someone that wants to be able to pedal to the top of the mountain and not worry what the trails back down are like, and be able to do it day after day. The Status 170 is equally at home in the bike park as it is out on gnarly enduro trails.
The 140mm Status is more of a daily driver for those that don't feel the need for a bigger bike and prefer something easier to pedal and more responsive on the descent, but still with a solid, reliable build kit. The Status is built using Specialized's M5 aluminum tubing, and is about as good as an alloy frame comes, making it a great starter bike that still cuts the mustard in the hands of a seasoned rider, while being super upgradeable should the need arise. In short, it's the best value mountain bike Specialized make that covers aggressive trail, enduro, and bike park.
Build & Spec
The new Status 2 comes in three main specs - the 140mm, the 170mm, and the 170mm DH, plus the two Size Zero bikes.
The 170mm bike comes with a 170mm Fox 38 Performance fork, and a Fox DHX Performance coil shock, X-Fusion Manic dropper post, Shimano Deore 12 speed drivetrain, TRP Trail EVO brakes, Specialized alloy wheels with Butcher GRID Trail T9 tires, and Specialized alloy bar and stem.
The 140mm bike has a Marzocchi Bomber Z1 140mm fork and a Bomber air shock, X-Fusion Manic dropper post, Shimano Deore 12 speed drivetrain, TRP Trail EVO brakes, Specialized alloy wheels with Butcher GRID Trail T9 front and T7 rear tires, and Specialized alloy bar and stem.
The 170 DH spec rocks a Boxxer RC with Charger 3 damper and 180mm travel, a Fox DHX performance coil shock, SRAM Maven Bronze brakes, a GX 7 speed DH specific drivetrain, Roval aluminum DH wheels, and Butcher GRID Gravity T9 tires.
The Size Zero 140 and 170mm bikes use air shocks, since coils are harder to set up for smaller riders, and so the 140mm bike comes with a Marzocchi Bomber Z1 air fork and Bomber air shock, SRAM NX 12sp drivetrain, Code R brakes, 100mm X-Fusion Manic dropper post and Butcher T7 tires. The 170mm bike comes with a Fox 36 Rhythm fork and Float X Performance shock, and the same SRAM NX Eagle drivetrain and Code brakes.
