Dream Build: Santa Cruz Nomad 7 x SRAM 1987 Collection

Dream Build: Santa Cruz Nomad 7 x SRAM 1987 Collection

Every now and then, a bike comes along that makes you stop and think: “What if we just built the ultimate version?” No compromises. No “good enough” parts. Just a blank canvas and a dangerously long list of dream components. Luckily, we’ve been spoiled for choice this year, with some of the most exciting new releases from our favorite brands giving us plenty of inspiration.

This was one of those bikes.

We started with one of the most exciting mountain bikes released this summer: the Santa Cruz Nomad 7 in a size Large and finished in Matte Metallic Earth.

Already an impressive platform straight out of the box, the latest Nomad brings a refined take on Santa Cruz’s long-travel enduro machine, featuring a reworked VPP suspension system, a lighter CC carbon frame (the only frame option now available), and an updated GloveBox storage system that keeps trail essentials tucked away without needing a backpack.

But we weren’t here to build a nice Nomad. We were here to build the Nomad.

A Piece of History: SRAM Eagle XX Transmission 1987 Collection

The centrepiece of this build had to be something special. Luckily, we got our hands on one of the limited SRAM Eagle XX Transmission 1987 groupsets produced earlier this year.

Finished in a stunning silver inspired by SRAM’s heritage, the 1987 groupset is a modern masterpiece with a retro-inspired twist. The details are what make it stand out: subtle branding engraved into the crankset, XX SL Eagle Transmission derailleur, remote mounts, and chain create a clean, understated look that rewards anyone paying attention.

Reserve 30|HD

A bike this capable needs wheels that can match its ambitions. We equipped the Nomad with the Reserve 30|HD wheelset in a mullet set-up. Built around DT Swiss 350 hubs, the 30|HD delivers the durability, engagement, and reliability expected from a wheelset designed for aggressive trail and enduro riding. To complete the setup, we paired the wheels with a Maxxis Assegai 2.50” MaxxGrip DoubleDown up front and a Maxxis Minion DHR II 2.50” MaxxGrip DoubleDown in the rear.

RockShox Components

A bike like the Nomad deserves suspension that can match its ambitions, so we went all-in with the latest from RockShox.

Up front, the bike is equipped with the new ZEB Ultimate, RockShox’s gravity-focused fork designed for riders who push harder, ride faster, and occasionally make questionable decisions when a trail feature looks too good to ignore. Earlier this year, RockShox updated the ZEB with new Linear XL damper paired with the AirAnnex located at the bottom of the left lower, Adjustable Bottom Out (ABO), it's new ButterWagon technology and a few more catchy names that might sound like marketing jargon, but truly make a difference in performance.

Out back, the new Vivid Coil Ultimate brings coil-sprung sensitivity and consistency to the Nomad’s rear suspension platform. Designed for aggressive trail and enduro riding, the Vivid delivers traction when you need it most, whether you’re charging through rough descents or searching for that perfect line. We completed the setup with the Reverb AXS seatpost.

SRAM Maven Ultimate B1 Brakes

The Nomad is built to go fast, but every great bike needs the confidence to slow down. Enter the latest generation SRAM Maven Ultimate B1 brakes in silver to match the 1987 groupset. With massive stopping power, improved modulation, and the control needed for everything from local laps to bike park adventures, the Maven Ultimate is the perfect match for a bike with this much capability.

OneUp Components

We equipped the Nomad with a collection of parts from OneUp Components, including their Carbon Handlebar, Goldstone Grips, Stem, and Chainguide. Known for creating simple, reliable, and trail-focused components, OneUp has built a reputation among riders who value performance without unnecessary complexity. As they say: Ride More. Worry Less.

Title Enduro Saddle

To finish the build, we looked to another local brand and added the Title ES1 Enduro saddle. Built with enduro riding in mind, the ES1 combines comfort, durability, and a clean design that fits perfectly with the rest of the build. Plus it's one of the amazing local brands that we're proud of supporting!
