We're a huge supporter of our local trail association, the NSMBA. Without them, we wouldn't have such an incredible network of trails at our doorstep, nor would we have the Fiver series - a fun and inclusive casual Thursday night race series. The Fiver series is just a small part on the surface of what the NSMBA does, but it does a lot to help their visibility and community engagement, and we're all for it. Oh and did we mention they're super FUN?Â
For the second year in a row, Steed Cycles sponsored the WTNB Fiver race in partnership with Montreal-based women's apparel brand Peppermint Cycling. The WTNB Fiver event is important to us, because it provides a safe and inclusive environment for women, trans, non-binary + folk, and kids to practice their race chops without the pressure of a classic Fiver.Â
The first WTNB Fiver of 2024, on July 11, was held on Mount Fromme, and the course was an absolute Fromme classic. Stage 1 took in classic black trail Expresso, with flowing lines, optional jumps, drops, and skinnies, and freshly rebuilt turns for a guaranteed good time. Stage 2 sent racers down Lower Expresso into Steed X Santa Cruz Bicycles sponsored trail Pennzoil, with more flow, jumps and berms on lower expresso, into the moderately janky Pennzoil, with more fresh packed dirt and rebuilt cornes. Stage 3 was a short pedal back up and down ubiquitous lower Fromme flow favourite, Lower Digger, with step ups, step downs, corners and optional ladder drops, it's a North Shore favourite.
Riders started rolling down to the Apres at the store around 7pm, greeted by twinkle lights and a hawaiian themed pool party complete with DJ and tiki bar with tropical drinks of all types. Kicking off the good times was a BBQ buffet with tropical themed burgers, followed up by Earnest ice cream. Stocking the bar was local Beva Brewing beers, Skratch Labs Margarita and Strawberry Lemonade for hydration, with the option to make it an adult beverage, plus Kirk's Probiotic Sodas.Â
We had a ton of fun, and after folks had gotten their food, we held a limbo competition with a ton of fun prizes including a full Peppermint kit, and a Peppermint/Steed Cycles piñata stuffed with Skratch chews and hydration sachets.Â
As always, it was great to see such an amazing crowd come down for the event - our local cycling community truly is the best, and we can't wait for the next one. We want to say a huge thank you to the NSMBA for putting these events on, to Peppermint Cycling for hosting with us, to all of the volunteers for helping out, and to our guests for coming. We couldn't do it without you!
