First Look: The New Santa Cruz Blur 5

First Look: The New Santa Cruz Blur 5

Cross-country bikes have come a long way.

Once built almost exclusively for race day, today's XC bikes need to do far more than sprint between tape. Riders are asking for lightweight efficiency that can still handle technical descents, long alpine adventures, and the rougher trails that define modern mountain biking.

That's exactly where the all-new Santa Cruz Blur shines.

Our backyard on the North Shore might not be famous for cross-country riding, but that doesn't mean we aren't excited about this release. In fact, many of our staff have owned multiple generations of the Blur over the years. Some raced them. Others used them to explore high alpine trails where a lightweight, efficient bike makes long climbs far more enjoyable without sacrificing confidence on the descent.

The latest Blur is built to do both even better. With more suspension travel, modern geometry, a lighter frame, and revised suspension kinematics, Santa Cruz has transformed the Blur into an incredibly capable short-travel bike that's just as comfortable lining up for an XC race as it is disappearing into the mountains for an all-day adventure.

More Travel.

The biggest headline is simple: every Blur now comes with 120mm of front and rear travel.

That's 5-13mm more rear travel than the previous generation, yet remarkably, there's virtually no weight penalty. Santa Cruz achieved this by keeping the same shock dimensions while redesigning the suspension layout to deliver more usable travel.

The updated leverage curve provides noticeably more support through the middle of the stroke, improving pedaling efficiency while giving the bike a calmer, more planted feel over rough terrain. Near bottom-out, the suspension ramps up progressively, allowing you to use the full travel without harsh impacts.

The result is a bike that climbs with exceptional efficiency while offering more confidence when trails get fast, steep, or technical.

Modern Geometry for Modern XC

The new geometry stretches the reach significantly while pairing it with shorter stems, creating a riding position that feels centered inside the bike rather than perched on top of it.

Key updates include:

  • 66° head tube angle
  • 75° seat tube angle
  • 475mm reach on a size Large
  • Lower bottom bracket for improved cornering stability
  • Shorter seat tubes for longer dropper posts

Whether you're attacking an XC race course or picking your way down technical singletrack, the Blur feels composed, confident, and surprisingly capable.

Lighter Without Compromise

Santa Cruz didn't just add capability, they also managed to reduce weight.

The new frame features slimmer tube profiles with optimized carbon shaping that uses less material where it isn't needed. They also refined the carbon layup, reducing overlapping plies while strategically increasing stiffness in key areas.

Even with the focus on shaving grams, durability remains a priority.

Like every Santa Cruz frame, the Blur is backed by a lifetime warranty and is built without a rider weight limit. It's designed to be ridden hard for years to come.

Small Details That Make a Big Difference

Santa Cruz packed the new Blur with thoughtful features that make it just as practical for long adventures as it is for race day.

  • Glovebox Storage: Integrated in-frame storage lets you stash tools, tubes, snacks, or an extra layer inside the downtube, keeping your essentials secure and your jersey pockets free.
  • Premium CC Carbon: Every Blur is built using Santa Cruz's lightest and highest-grade CC carbon layup, delivering an exceptional balance of low weight, stiffness, and durability.
  • Mechanical or Electronic Drivetrains: The frame accommodates both mechanical and electronic drivetrains, giving riders the flexibility to build their Blur the way they want.
  • Size-Specific Design: Every frame size receives its own geometry and carbon layup, ensuring riders—from Small to XXL—experience the same balanced ride characteristics Santa Cruz intended.

Who Is the New Blur For?

The new Blur is built for two kinds of riders.

The Racer

Whether you're chasing podiums at your local XC series or lining up for marathon races, the Blur is every bit the modern race machine. Lightweight CC carbon, efficient 120mm suspension, progressive geometry, and dedicated Race builds with RockShox lockouts make it ready to pin a number on and go.

If you're the type of rider who loves shaving seconds off climbs, comparing lap times, and dialing every detail of your setup, the Blur delivers the speed and efficiency you're after.

The Adventure Rider

Not every ride needs a finish line.

For riders who measure success in kilometers explored rather than medals won, the Blur is equally at home on all-day mountain adventures. Efficient suspension keeps long climbs comfortable, while the updated geometry and extra travel inspire confidence when the trail gets rough on the way back down.

Accessory mounts make it easy to carry tools and ride essentials, and Santa Cruz's legendary durability means it's built for years of big rides, not just race day.
