E-Bikes: What Really Matters?

E-bikes have come a long way over the last decade, with new technology continuing to push the possibilities of what they can do. More torque, greater peak power, bigger batteries and longer range have opened up new possibilities for riders and helped make e-bikes more capable than ever.

But with so many options available, how do you know what’s right for you?

More power and range can be valuable, but the most powerful motor or biggest battery isn’t necessarily the best choice for every rider. What matters is finding the right balance for how, where and how far you actually ride. So, instead of getting lost in the numbers, let’s break down three factors that can help you choose the right e-bike: power, battery and weight.

Power

As e-bike technology has evolved, motors have become increasingly capable, and the trend toward more power shows no signs of slowing down. But it’s worth taking the numbers with a grain of salt. More capability doesn’t necessarily mean a better experience for every rider.

More power can make a significant difference in certain situations. If you’re climbing steep terrain, carrying extra weight or trying to squeeze as many laps as possible into a ride, having plenty of power can be a real advantage. At the same time, the ideal level of power depends on the rider and how the bike will be used. Today’s motors offer a range of combinations of power, weight and efficiency, so it’s less about choosing the biggest numbers and more about finding the system that best matches your riding.

Torque: That Extra Push

Torque is measured in Newton-metres (Nm), and it’s one of the numbers you’ll see most often when comparing e-bike motors. In simple terms, torque is the twisting force that helps the motor get you moving and maintain momentum on climbs. More torque can be particularly useful on steep terrain, at lower speeds or when carrying additional weight.

But torque is only part of the story.

Two motors with similar torque figures can feel very different on the trail. How that power is delivered, including how smoothly and naturally it responds to your input, can be just as important as the maximum amount available. That’s why, when possible, a test ride in real riding conditions is the best ways to get a feel for how a motor performs and whether it suits the way you ride. 

Peak Power vs. Continuous Power

You’ll also see motor output listed in watts. Peak power is the maximum output a motor can provide, usually for a limited period. Continuous power refers to what it can sustain over a longer period. 

Peak numbers make for impressive spec sheets, but they don’t necessarily tell you how a bike will feel. A motor that delivers power smoothly and predictably can be much easier to ride than one that simply gives you everything at once. And that matters, especially when the trail gets technical.

Fine-Tuning the Power

If your rides involve long, sustained climbs, steep fire roads or big days in the mountains, additional power can be a huge advantage. It can get you back to the top faster and make it easier to fit more riding into your day. For riders who want to replace the shuttle truck altogether, having plenty of climbing assistance can be a pretty compelling proposition.

But technical climbs are a different story. When you’re slowly working your way over roots, rocks and ledges, too much power at the wrong moment can actually make things harder. A sudden surge of torque can break rear-wheel traction or make it harder to maintain control.

Fortunately, modern e-bike motors have become much better at managing this. Most systems today offer sophisticated torque and traction management to deliver power more smoothly when traction is limited. Many allow riders to fine-tune the motor through a companion app, adjusting support levels, power output and responsiveness to suit their riding style and terrain.

It’s a big improvement, but it doesn’t eliminate the need to find the right settings for your riding style. If you’re the tinkering type, there’s plenty of fun to be had experimenting with the different tuning options to find the setup that feels just right.

So instead of asking: “How much power does this motor have?”

Ask yourself: “How much power do I actually need?”

Battery: Range vs Weight

When choosing an e-bike, the battery is just as important to consider as the motor. The relationship is fairly simple: a more powerful motor can provide more assistance, but using more assistance generally means using more energy. A larger battery gives you more capacity, which can mean more range and more time riding at higher assistance levels, but it also adds weight.

The right battery size ultimately depends on how and where you ride. For some riders, maximum range is a priority. For others, a smaller, lighter battery may be more than enough for their typical rides.

An e-MTB rider spending hours climbing steep terrain, exploring backcountry trails or doing multiple laps in a day may benefit from a larger battery. The extra capacity can mean more time riding and fewer concerns about managing battery levels. On the other hand, someone looking to decompress with a daily 1–2 hour ride might not need the biggest battery or the heaviest setup.

E-Road, Gravel and Commuting

For road, gravel and commuting, a lighter e-bike can offer a great balance of assistance, range and natural ride feel.
